CKLA Sound Slap Posters

Bring some high-energy movement to your literacy block with these CKLA Letter Sound Slap Posters!

These posters are designed to turn your classroom doorway into an interactive learning zone. Whether you are a seasoned CKLA pro or just looking for a fun way to reinforce phonics, these “Sound Slaps” provide the repetition students need to master their sounds.

How it Works:

Post these near your door, and as students enter or exit the room, they “slap” the handprint and say the corresponding letter sound. It’s a quick, 3-second check-in that builds massive fluency over time!

What’s Included:

  • CKLA Aligned: Includes the letter sounds and imagery consistent with the Core Knowledge Language Arts (CKLA) curriculum.
  • Action-Oriented Design: Features clear handprint icons to show students exactly where to “slap.”

Why Teachers Love It:

  • Perfect for Transitions: Turns “hallway time” into “learning time.”
  • Kinesthetic Learning: Great for students who need to move while they learn.
  • Versatile: Use them for “Exit Tickets,” morning arrival routines, or even as a station in your literacy centers.

Make phonics the favorite part of your students’ day!

Teacher’s Guide: Quick Tips for Success

To get the most out of your CKLA Letter Sound Slap Posters, try these simple strategies to keep the routine fresh and effective:

  1. Model the “Gentle Slap” Before starting, demonstrate a “high-five” or a gentle tap rather than a hard hit. This keeps your posters (and your walls!) safe while keeping the focus on the sound.
  2. The “Sound of the Week” While you may have several posters up, designate one as the “Power Sound.” Students must say that specific sound three times or give a “secret” motion (like a finger snap) when they hit it to earn an extra cheer!
  3. Differentiate the Heights Place posters at varying heights. Put some lower for your smaller students and a few slightly higher to give them a fun “reach” goal.
  4. Incorporate “Whisper & Shout” Change the “mode” of the day. On Monday, they might “Whisper Slap,” and on Friday, they might “Power Slap” (saying the sound loudly and proudly).
  5. Use During “Line-Up” Games If you have a few minutes while waiting for the bell, call out a sound. The first student to find it and tap it gets to be the line leader for that transition.
  6. Switch Them Weekly To avoid “wallpaper syndrome” (where kids stop noticing the posters), swap the letters out every Monday to match your current CKLA unit or to review “tricky” sounds from the previous week.

Pro-Tip: Laminate your posters or cover the handprint area with clear packing tape so they stay clean and durable even after hundreds of “slaps” from little hands!
