Sounds & Digraphs Rock, Paper, Scissors Game

Bring a classic playground favorite into your literacy block! Specifically designed to align with CKLA Kindergarten (Units 3-6) and 1st Grade foundational skills, this game turns phonics drills into an action-packed challenge. We know that digraphs (two letters making one sound) require constant repetition to become automatic—this game provides that high-frequency practice while students play!

How to Play p. 2

A simple, one-page guide for students and teachers:

  • The Setup: Students pair up, each holding their stack of Digraph Sound cards.
  • The Battle: Students say “Rock, Paper, Scissors, Shoot!” and reveal their move.
  • The Twist: The winner of the round must say the sound (and an optional example word) on the top of their card to “claim” the point.
  • The Goal: Collect the most “Sound Cards” by the end of the round!

Phonics Cards Included p. 3-15

Custom-designed cards featuring the core CKLA Consonant Digraphs:

  • The “H” Brothers: ch, sh, th (voiced and unvoiced)
  • Ending Digraphs: ck and ng.
  • Visual Support: Small icons on the cards to remind students of the Rock, Paper, Scissors rules.
  • Clear, Bold Font: Sized perfectly for small hands and modeled after CKLA-style lettering.

Why Teachers Love It

  • CKLA Aligned: Includes the specific digraphs taught in the Kindergarten and 1st Grade sequence.
  • Science of Reading (SoR) Friendly: Focuses on phoneme-grapheme mapping through repetitive, multisensory play.
  • Zero-Prep Transition: Once cards are cut, this is a “go-to” activity for early finishers, literacy centers, or small-group warm-ups.
  • Peer-to-Peer Coaching: Students listen to one another and correct sounds in real-time.
