Making 10 Hospital

🏥 Make-a-Ten Hospital

Objective: Act like a "Math Surgeon" to heal "unhealthy" equations by moving units to make a friendly number 10.

🩺 What You Need:

  • The Surgery Mat: (A double ten-frame template)

  • Patient Cards: (Equations like 9+5 or 8+7)

  • Band-Aid Counters: (Two different colors of math manipulatives/counters)

  • The Strategy Log: (Your recording sheet)

📋 How to Play:

  • Step 1: Admit a Patient Pick an Unhealthy Equation card from the pile. Write this equation in the first column of your Strategy Log.

  • Step 2: Prepare for Surgery Look at the first number. Put that many counters of Color A onto the first ten-frame. Then, look at the second number and put that many counters of Color B onto the second ten-frame.

    • Example: For 9+4, put 9 red counters in the top frame and 4 yellow counters in the bottom frame.

  • Step 3: Perform the "Make-a-Ten" Surgery Move just enough "Band-Aids" (counters) from the second frame to fill up the first frame until it is a perfect 10.

  • Step 4: Record the "Healthy" Equation Look at your mats now! Your first frame is a 10. How many are left in the second frame? Write your new equation on your log (it should start with 10!).

    • Example: 9+4 becomes 10+3.

  • Step 5: Discharge the Patient Write the total sum and clear your board for the next patient!

💬 Math Surgeon Talk (Questions to ask your partner):

  • "How many units did you have to move to make a ten?"

  • "Why is 10+3 easier to solve than 9+4?"

  • "Did the total number of counters change after the surgery?"
