Sound Detective: Same or Different

Looking for a simple yet powerful way to build foundational literacy skills? This video is a perfect tool for parents and teachers focused on phonological awareness.

We guide young learners through a fun, interactive listening game. Children will practice two critical skills:

  • Auditory Discrimination: Carefully listening to and distinguishing between various environmental sounds.
  • Sound Segmentation & Counting: Counting the number of distinct sounds they hear, which lays the groundwork for segmenting words into syllables and phonemes.

This activity is a fantastic precursor to formal reading instruction. By training their ears to identify and count individual sounds, children are building the neural connections needed to later recognize and manipulate the sounds within words.

Standards-Based Learning

This video directly addresses key learning objectives from the Common Core State Standards:

CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.RF.K.2:
Demonstrate understanding of spoken words, syllables, and sounds (phonemes).

This video helps children develop this skill by focusing on their ability to hear and process individual sounds in a non-verbal context.

CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.RF.K.2.b:
Count, pronounce, blend, and segment syllables in spoken words.

Our counting activity provides an early-stage application of this skill, teaching children to count “units” of sound before moving on to syllables in words.

Extend the learning!

After the video, try creating your own “Sound Detective” game at home or in the classroom. Use simple objects like pencils, keys, or paper to make sounds and challenge your child to listen and count.
